Alabaster From Mechelen - Belgium - Early 17th Century
Alabaster plaque from Mechelen, 17th century
This delicate alabaster plaque, finely carved in bas-relief, follows in the tradition of the Mechelen workshops, renowned in the 16th and 17th centuries for their production of devotional objects and genre scenes.
The scene depicts a group of animated figures in a lively narrative composition. On the left, a male figure wearing a hat is seated, accompanied by an animal, probably a donkey, a frequent element in popular or biblical scenes. In the center, a moving young man appears to be carrying an object or container, while on the right, two female figures, dressed in soft, elegant drapery, interact in an expressive attitude, suggesting an exchange or a scene from everyday life.
The treatment of the faces, with their soft, slightly idealized features, as well as the meticulous rendering of the folds of clothing, testify to the skill of the Malinese sculptors. Alabaster, a fine translucent material, lends the ensemble a luminous softness and great finesse of detail.
The platelet is framed in a molded and gilded wooden frame, probably later, adorned with engraved motifs and decorative cabochons, highlighting the central scene.
