Oil On Parchment, *christ Mocked*, By A Late Mannerist Artist From Liguria, Second Half Of The 16th Century
Artist: Cercle De Berardo Castello 1570-90
An intriguing and refined depiction of Christ Mocked, executed in oil on parchment by a late Mannerist artist from the Ligurian-Genoese school during the second half of the 16th century, likely within the Castello workshop, Giovanni Battista and Bernardo, who, in addition to creating important murals and panel paintings, were dedicated to producing works for private devotion and for aristocratic collections, which often involved the use of parchments to be placed in private or travel altars.
Interesting and atypical from an iconographic perspective, featuring a single soldier attacking Christ with some violence; the crown of thorns lies on the ground, indicating a deeply devout meditation on the part of the patron
The item we are offering measures 12 cm x 20 cm. It is set in a beautiful filigree frame executed with great skill; furthermore, it is mounted under glass in an antique-style frame with a red velvet mat. 28 cm x 45 cm
A certificate of authenticity is included with the sale.
