Dancing Bacchante By Renée (irene), Baroness Of Vranyczany-dobrinović (croatian, 1879-1958)

Artist: Renée, Baronne De Vranyczany-dobrinović
This Art Nouveau bronze sculpture of a dancing nude bacchante was created in Paris by Croatian sculptor Renée (Irène), Baroness de Vranyczany-Dobrinović (1879-1958). This sculpture of the bacchic dancer was strongly inspired by the famous Russian dancer Anna Pavlova.

Here's an excerpt from the article by Darija Alujevic, Fine Arts Archive, Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Zagreb:

The name and sculptural work of Renée (Irene) Vranyczany-Dobrinović (1879-1958), born in Rijeka, are today almost completely forgotten by art history. Yet they were well known to Zagreb artists and art critics in the first decades of the 20th century. During her stays in Vienna, Paris and Munich, she frequented and exhibited alongside major figures of Croatian modernism, Tomislav Krizman and Ivan Meštrović. Today, her works are dispersed in collections around the world and appear in auctions from various European and American houses. However, even the art market provides little information about his German nationality. Extensive Internet research has made it possible to find photographs of his preserved works and shed light on his artistic work and career. Thus, his only two works in Croatia are of particular value: the 1904 sculpture of Christ, located in front of the Evangelical Church of Christ in Opatija, and the 1910 Portrait of a Man, preserved in the Glyptothek of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Vranyczany's solid training, first at the Vienna School of Fine Arts, where she graduated in sculpture with Arthur Strasser in 1905, then in Paris between 1909 and 1912, was the basis of her remarkable oeuvre. This evolves from her academic beginnings, marked by resolutely realistic modeling dominated by portraits, to a second phase, around 1912, characterized by sculptures of dancers made in Paris under the influence of Art Nouveau and inspired by Russian ballet and the dancer Anna Pavlova. Although she spent most of her life abroad, she never broke ties with her homeland. A descendant of the illustrious and prestigious Croatian noble family of Vranyczany-Dobrinović, she certainly deserves a prominent place in the history of this family, as well as in that of Croatian art.
