Moreau's Bronze Beauty And The Beast
Artist: Moreau
Superb sculpture of a woman cutting off a lion's claws. The Goddess wears an elegant dress with flowing sleeves, revealing a bare breast, an allegory of fertility. Her drapery lends her lightness and movement, and her serenity contrasts with the power of the lion whose claws she is cutting. It is therefore possible that this is a representation of the Goddess Cybele, mother of the Gods, Goddess of nature, fertility, and protection in Greek mythology. She was abandoned at birth and then taken in by a lion. This bronze, with a perfectly even light brown patina, is signed MOREAU. The base is an ovoid marble slab on which the sculpture simply rests. It bears a cartouche with the inscription: "THE AMPUTEES TO THEIR COMRADE HENRI TORRES May 13, 1939 BEAUTY AND THE BEAST" Information and other photos available upon request
