His first sculpted work was the Education of Bacchus, exhibited at the Universal Exhibition of 1855 in Paris. He worked in France under Napoleon III and returned to Turin at the request of Victor Emmanuel II for whom he made statues. It was from there that he made in 1858 and sent to Paris this "Pensierosa", where it decorates a niche in the north wing of the Cour Carrée of the Louvre. In 1867, he was director of the workshops of the Société Générale de Photosculpture de France and fought against Alexandre Dumas, who did not appreciate this technique.
