Circular Shell Cameo - Allegorical Scene - Grand Tour Work, 19th Century
Circular carved shellcamera - allegorical scene - Grand Tour work, 19th century
Beautiful circular cameo finely carved in shell, depicting an allegorical scene of neoclassical inspiration, animated by female and child figures in a vegetal and architectural setting.
The delicately balanced composition features figures treated with gentleness and elegance, in a spirit directly inherited from ancient models rediscovered in the 18th century and widely disseminated in the 19th century through Grand Tour productions.
The sculptural work demonstrates a fine mastery, both in the modeling of faces and in the rendering of drapery and decorative elements, with a subtle use of the different layers of shell to create depth and contrast.
Ancient restoration is noted: the shell was broken in two in the past, but has undergone a high-quality restoration, now very discreet and hardly perceptible to the eye.
Presented in a later frame, mounted on red felt highlighting the fine relief.
