Adrien van der Werff (Kralingen, January 21, 1659 - Rotterdam, November 12, 1722) was a Dutch painter, sculptor and architect.
Biography
Born in Kralingen, near Rotterdam, he was a pupil of Eglon van der Neer. A precocious artist, he was already working in Rotterdam at the age of 17, painting religious and mythological scenes as well as portraits, and quickly acquired great renown. In 1697, he was appointed court painter to Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm. The Elector Palatine granted him a pension and ennobled him.
Van der Werff was considered by his contemporaries to be the greatest Dutch painter of his time, before being accused of betraying the Dutch naturalist tradition in the 19th century.
His younger brother, Pieter van der Werff (1661-1722), was his pupil.
