Beauvaisis Sandstone Apothecary Jar, Medieval Albarello, 15th Century Provenance Label
Beauvaisis sandstone apothecary jar, medieval albarello, 15th-century provenance label
Charming little gray earthenware apothecary jar, made of Beauvaisis sandstone, dating from the late 15th or early 16th century. This type of container was intended to hold balms and medicinal remedies, and is in the tradition of the large pharmacy jars, known as albarelli in Italy, whose form it takes here on a reduced scale.
A comparable example, turned and of similar dimensions, is published in Danièle Alexandre-Bidon's Dans l'atelier de l'apothicaire (Éditions Picard, 2013, p. 80). This reference model is kept at the Musée de Cluny - Musée national du Moyen Âge in Paris.
The example presented has a remarkable feature: discovered in the 19th century, it still retains its old label, handwritten in ink, affixed when it was unearthed. This label reflects a misinterpretation at the time, describing it as a "Gallic beaker". It still reads in part:
"Gallic beaker, found 4 meters below a Roman pot during excavations [...] August 1869, for the [...] Paris".
This historical testimony adds further interest to the object, illustrating the evolution of archaeological knowledge and attributions.
The pot is in very good condition, complete with period, with no cracks or chips.
Dimensions: height 8.5 cm; diameter 6 cm.
A beautiful object both modest and steeped in history, emblematic of the medicinal practices of the late Middle Ages.
