Reclining Nude Woman By Johannes Hendrikus Jurres (1875-1946)
Artist: Johannes Hendrikus Jurres (1875–1946)
Oil on canvas depicting a reclining female nude, presented in its original frame
The work is signed “JH Jurres” in the upper left corner.
On the reverse, several old labels are visible, including an inscription in Dutch: “liggend naakt” (reclining nude), as well as fragments of labels mentioning “Ams,” likely for Amsterdam.
Johannes Hendrikus Jurres, a Dutch painter active at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, developed a body of work characterized by an energetic brushstroke and a penchant for dramatic compositions.
Here, the female figure, reclining in a relaxed posture with almost tormented undertones, is rendered with great freedom. The modeling of the body, built with broad brushstrokes, contrasts with a barely sketched background, creating a strong visual tension. The palette, dominated by ochres, browns, and deep reds, reinforces the scene’s expressive intensity. The use of red, which is particularly prominent, further accentuates this atmosphere.
While the inscription refers to a nude study, the composition presents an obvious dramatic dimension, which may have led to a more narrative interpretation, hence its second known title: “After the Assassination.”
This work is reminiscent of some of the artist’s explorations of tragic themes, evoking, in spirit, compositions such as *The Death of Jezebel*, though no direct connection can be established.
A large-scale, highly decorative piece with a powerful presence.
Johannes Hendrikus Jurres (1875–1946) was a Dutch painter trained in the academic tradition of the late 19th century.
A student at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Kunstnijverheid and later at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, where he would later teach, he developed a body of work centered on the human figure, addressing both historical subjects and figure studies. His work is characterized by a loose brushstroke and a warm palette, reflecting a sensibility that was both inherited from the old masters and open to the artistic developments of his time. Based in Amsterdam, he also undertook several trips throughout Europe, notably to Italy, Switzerland, and Spain, which enriched his artistic approach.
