Bacchus Child And Putti, Neo-classical Gouache, Empire Period
BACCHANALE DE PUTTI - NEO-CLASSICAL GOUACHE, EMPIRE ERA
Charming composition from the late 18th or early 19th century, depicting a child bacchanal in a landscape of antique-inspired ruins.
In the center, a young Bacchus topped with vine tassels squeezes a bunch of grapes into a cup, while at his feet a sleeping putto evokes drunkenness. To the right, another child, in a collected attitude, completes the scene and introduces a more symbolic reading.
The set unfolds in a decor of architectural caprice, dominated by a medallion featuring Janus in double profile, surrounded by zodiac signs, reinforcing the neo-antique taste characteristic of the period.
The technique, close to gouache or heightened watercolor, offers a soft, harmonious palette of delicately muted tones. The drawing features fine modelling and a definite charm in the treatment of the childlike figures.
High-quality decorative work, typical of the neo-classical taste under the Directoire or Empire periods, probably inspired by 18th-century models.
Presented in its original carved and gilded wood frame, decorated with pearls and rosettes, also from the Empire period.
Very good overall condition, fresh colors.
