Gouache, Arcadian Landscape, Neoclassical, First Half Of The 19th Century

- Framed gouache depicting a landscape of Arcadia, a neoclassical work dating from the early 19th century

- This view presents us with a captivating, skillfully composed panorama. The foreground depicts a sweep of rugged terrain brought to life by a shepherd accompanied by his dog and his flock of sheep. He is separated from another shepherd and flock visible on a more distant plateau. The landscape is embellished with architectural elements that enhance the picturesque quality of this view. In the background, one can see the sea and mountain ranges depicted in bluish tones. A close examination of this landscape is captivating, both because of the southern light rendered with such freshness and because of the precision of details—such as the vegetation in the foreground, where every leaf is discernible and appears to be in motion.

- The neoclassical style of this painting is thus reflected in the artist’s idealized and aesthetic approach, inspired by classical ideals of antiquity—such as the land of Arcadia—or perhaps by a real landscape in Italy.

- The gilded wooden frame, also from the 19th century, is adorned with a frieze of heart-shaped motifs along the inner edge and a beaded frieze along the outer edge.

- A slight halo is visible in the sky, and there is some wear on the frame.

- Dimensions - Width (without frame): 40.5 cm, width (with frame): 49.5 cm, height (without frame): 32.5 cm, height (with frame): 41.7 cm
