Pair Of Flemish Gouaches – Rural Landscapes, Early 19th Century
Flemish or Dutch school
Early 19th century, circa 1810–1830
Pair of small gouaches on paper
Presented in later frames with mat
Charming pair of small gouaches depicting rural landscapes, painted in the early 19th century and displaying many characteristics of the Flemish and Dutch landscape tradition.
The first composition shows a farmhouse or rural house with a sloping roof, animated by a few small figures, with a village and its bell tower in the background. The second depicts a house built on the water’s edge, accompanied by a boat, a solitary tree, and a very open landscape.
The rendering is delicate and meticulous: the figures are reduced to small silhouettes that provide a sense of scale for the buildings and the landscape, while the expansive skies and low horizons accentuate the sense of space. The presence of water, rural architecture, sloping roofs, and the highly horizontal composition bring these works closer to the tradition of small landscape views from the Netherlands and Flanders.
This approach to landscape painting—emphasizing skies, bodies of water, small figures, and modest architecture—is part of a long-standing tradition that is particularly strong in the Northern schools. Small landscape gouaches have long been a genre prized by art lovers and collectors, allowing carefully composed scenes to be presented in a compact format. Examples of small-format Flemish gouaches, featuring tiny figures and water views, are held in major European collections and continue to appear on the art market.
However, precise attribution to a national school remains difficult without a signature or inscription identifying the artist. The Flemish or Dutch origin currently seems to us the most convincing, rather than a French, Italian, or Swiss origin. Switzerland remains a possibility due to certain technical aspects, but the absence of mountainous relief and the very horizontal nature of both compositions point more strongly toward landscapes from northern regions.
Both works are now presented in attractive later gilded frames, which are not original. However, they have been carefully highlighted by an elegant matte, giving the pair a understated and refined presentation.
Please note: a slight defect measuring approximately 2 cm on one of the two frames, which has no major impact on the presentation of the works.
A particularly charming pair, full of finesse and poetry, that will appeal to lovers of small antique landscapes and Northern School painting.
