Alexandre Defaux (french, 1826-1900): Pony At Stable With Chickens Oil On Canvas
Alexandre Defaux (French, 1826-1900): "Pony at stable with hens"
A masterful study of the Barbizon School farmyard
This evocative oil on canvas by the renowned French landscape and animal painter Alexandre Defaux offers a glimpse into the peaceful, intimate world of 19th-century rural life. The work depicts a sturdy gray pony standing in the soft diffused light of a barn, accompanied by a group of hens pecking at golden straw.
Defaux's mastery of light and texture shines through in the pony's shaggy coat and the painterly, tactile quality of the hay. Breaking with the formal, "heroic" equestrian portraits of the period, this work embraces the philosophy of the Barbizon School: finding beauty in the humble, everyday realities of the natural world.
About the artist : Alexandre Defaux (1826-1900)
Alexandre Defaux was an important figure in the 19th-century French art world, best known for his atmospheric landscapes of the Fontainebleau forest and charming farm scenes.
The Corot connection : Defaux was a brilliant pupil of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, the father of modern French landscape painting. While he inherited Corot's lyrical sense of light, Defaux developed a more vigorous, textured style that became his trademark.
Salon success: He was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon from 1859 until his death, consistently receiving critical acclaim and winning multiple medals (1871, 1874, 1875).
Highest honors: In 1881, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur (Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur), France's highest order of merit for art and culture.
Today, his works feature in prestigious public collections, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and several major regional museums in France and Europe. He is particularly sought after by collectors for his poultry scenes, considered among the finest examples of the genre.
The painting is framed in a magnificent, deeply contoured 19th-century gilded wood frame. This frame is richly adorned with interlaced laurel and acanthus leaf carvings, delicate floral motifs at the corners and rich aged gold leaf gilding that contrasts harmoniously with the warm, natural tones of the stable interior.
