Large Pair Of Antique Silver-plated Altar Candlesticks, France, Style Louis XVI

A magnificent, pair of large silver-plated altar candlesticks of French origin, dating from the third quarter of the 19th century (circa 1870). Originally designed for a church altar, these impressive ecclesiastical candlesticks combine an elegant classical design with exceptional quality and dimensions.

Each candlestick features a tall fluted column rising from a massive triangular pedestal, supported by three richly ornamented volute feet. The three sides of each base are beautifully decorated with religious figures finely crafted in repoussé, reflecting their original liturgical function and lending them considerable decorative appeal.

The original tips (the spikes) are still in place, designed to support large wax altar candles. Their imposing height and architectural form make them today prominent decorative pieces, ideal for adorning a country house or a period interior.

Although this is a composed pair rather than a strictly identical original pair, they are the same except for one being slightly taller.

Both candlesticks are made of silver-plated metal, are solidly constructed, and are in very good condition, showing only slight wear and a beautiful patina consistent with their age and ecclesiastical use.
