19th Century Oil On Canvas: Follower Of Alfred De Dreux - Capitaine Des Mousquetaires

Artist: Apres Alfred De Dreux

Beautiful 19th-century oil on canvas depicting a captain of the Musketeers on horseback turning around, based on the famous composition by Alfred de Dreux. Executed at the same time as the original and in identical dimensions, this work faithfully reproduces the composition listed in the artist's catalog raisonné, accurately rendering the poise of the rider, the elegance of his gray mount and all the vivacity of this emblematic equestrian scene.

The painting bears a signature "Alfred de Dreux" in the lower right. This, however, must be considered apocryphal, the work being attributable to a follower, an artist in his entourage or a contemporary working in his style. This type of cover was common in the 19th century and testifies to the considerable success de Dreux's equestrian compositions enjoyed with collectors of his day.

.

The composition is reproduced in the catalog raisonné compiled by Marie-Christine Renauld under the title Capitaine des mousquetaires se retournant (ref. MCR 132), enabling the precise identification of the original model from which it was inspired.

Presented in an elegant restored antique frame in wood and gilded metal, the painting benefits from a beautiful presentation. The canvas has been lined in the past, according to a common conservation practice designed to reinforce and preserve the original support. It has also undergone a recent professional restoration, carried out in accordance with traditional conservation techniques. The pictorial surface shows a slight network of craquelure, consistent with its age, while the palette has retained all its freshness and lustre.

The whole is in very good condition and ready to hang.
