Medieval Harness Pendant With Coat Of Arms - 13th / 14th Century, Provenance, High Period, Gothic
Rare and exceptional medieval bronze harness pendant, with a remarkable dimension of 10.2 cm, a size quite out of the ordinary for this type of object. Harness pendants were intended to adorn horses, attached in particular to straps or bridles, fulfilling both a decorative and identity function.
This example, of remarkable quality and presence, stands out for its uniqueness: no comparable piece of this size is currently known in public or private collections.
The decoration features an armorial shield: "Quartered by a cross, with four rampant lions of the same". Unfortunately, the absence of polychromy makes it impossible to identify with certainty the family to which these arms belong. The shield is framed by three finely stylized griffins, reinforcing the iconographic richness of the ensemble.
The object is made entirely of bronze using the lost-wax technique. The reverse retains its two original iron fasteners, intended for attachment to a leather strap, attesting to its authenticity and integrity.
This type of production is characteristic of the late 13th or 14th century. Note that this piece is in its original, unglazed condition, displaying a beautiful golden bronze hue, particularly prized at the time.
Its provenance is quite exceptional: it comes from the personal collection of Adrien Prévost de Longpérier (1816-1882), eminent archaeologist, numismatist and curator of antiquities at the Louvre between 1847 and 1870. Close to the imperial family, he was also an advisor for the acquisition of antiques.
A major piece, both for its rarity and its prestigious provenance.
