Monoxyl Coffee Table - Brutalism, Japanese Inspiration
Monoxyl coffee table
Exceptional monoxyl coffee table with a sculptural character, blending organic brutality and sobriety inspired by Japanese aesthetics. Carved from a single trunk of solid wood, this unique piece was acquired in the 1980s at BRAFA (Brussels Art Fair) as a Japanese tea table from the Edo period.
While this attribution remains difficult to certify with precision, its powerful, stripped and deeply balanced allure undeniably evokes the great principles of traditional Asian art, while dialoguing with the Brutalist movement at its most authentic and organic.
The top, with a remarkable thickness of over 10 cm, is carved from the mass and rests on two equally monoxyletic supports, asserting a presence that is both stable and almost primitive. The wood, dense and quite heavy, has a superb, deep, satiny brown patina, a testament to time and its history.
With its dimensions of 111 cm in length, 54 cm in width and 20 cm in height, this coffee table straddles the border between art furniture and functional sculpture. It will naturally find its place in a contemporary, wabi-sabi, brutalist interior or in a universe inspired by Japanese design.
A rare, singular piece, unlike any other, that appeals as much to design enthusiasts as to collectors sensitive to essential, timeless forms.
