Pair Of 18th-century Books: L’agronome, Or Portable Dictionary For The Cultivator.
Set of two volumes of L’Agronome ou Dictionnaire portatif du cultivateur, Rouen edition, published by the widow of Pierre Dumesnil, 1787.
Volume I: A–LUZ. Volume II: M–YEU.
A fine 18th-century set in its original full mottled calf bindings, with raised bands and gilt fillets to the spines, and volume numbering to the spine.
Conceived as a practical dictionary for use in the rural world, this work brings together a wealth of useful knowledge relating to country life: crops, gardens, plants, animals, domestic economy, and various practical skills.
The set retains all the genuine charm of early bibliophily, with a sober and authentic appearance, typical of the practical books of the period.
Condition: bindings worn, with rubbing, small losses of leather, worn spine caps, and rubbed corners; the interior remains fairly fresh and sound, with the normal signs of age.
A charming and informative set, both decorative and documentary, of interest for an antique library, a cabinet of curiosities, or a collector of works relating to rural life and the history of agriculture.
