Large Armchair Attributed To Othon
Large Louis XVI period armchair attributed to Pierre OTHON. Late 18th century. An armchair known as "à la reine" resting on four fluted and filleted legs at the front and back. The arm brackets are also fluted and filleted. The medallion-shaped backrest is round. The seat is horseshoe-shaped. The crosspieces are embellished with deep moldings. The top of the back and the front crosspiece are carved with acanthus leaves. The upholstery is traditional, with webbing and horsehair. In good condition. The armchair is upholstered in a worn 18th-century petit point tapestry. Pierre OTHON (master in 1760) is a carpenter mentioned in rue des Vieux-Augustins. His work is composed of Louis XV and Louis XVI pieces, with sober, supple and elegant lines for the former, and rigorously drawn lines for the latter. Jean Nicolay emphasizes that he was keen to give a subtle balance to his seats, always sculpted with great care.
