Limoges 13th Century, Champlevé Enamelled Copper Christ, Enamel, Enamels, Middle Ages
Magnificent and very rare XIIIth century Limoges enamel in engraved copper and champlevé enamels.
This is a medieval Christ on the cross, with remains of champlevé enamel.
This religious object was most certainly intended to be attached to a processional cross or a reliquary chase.
It has come down to us in this condition, missing left hand and feet.
Christ is depicted frontally, with outstretched arms, wearing a long tunic (colobium) and a crown, according to the iconography of Christus triumphans. The body, rendered schematically, has elongated proportions and a marked stylization, inherited from the Romanesque tradition. The face, with its simplified features, expresses a hieratic solemnity. Traces of champlevé enamel and gilding remain, attesting to the original polychromy. An opening at the base indicates it was once attached to a cross, now lost.
These medieval enamels are very rare for sale, in my 20 years in the trade, this is the first in my possession.
It was fixed by the previous owners on a velvet-covered wooden plaque and framed.
This object comes from a Limousin collection and has never been seen on the market.
Thirteenth century.
Delivery 18 euros in France, 35 euros in the EU and 150 euros rest of the world.
