Oil Painting: Lively African Landscape, Ziguinchor, 1963, By Jacques De Saint-seine
Artist: Jacques De Saint-seine (1897–1972)
Oil on hardboard depicting a lively tropical landscape, featuring a body of water lined with palm trees and dotted with figures engaged in swimming. The composition opens up widely onto a sky rendered with expansiveness, lending the entire scene a sense of spaciousness.
The work is characterized by a vivid and contrasting palette, where warm earth tones interact with the blues and greens of the vegetation and the sky. The free brushwork reflects a masterful execution from life.
The back retains an old label, likely intended to specify the title, location, and artist of the work. Although partially erased, it remains rich in information.
Its upper portion, which is damaged, reveals elements that are still legible, including the probable inscription: “Environs de Ziguinchor … (to be deciphered) … 1963” (partial reading to be confirmed).
A handwritten inscription further down, previously transcribed with an incorrect spelling, has been corrected through cross-referencing, allowing for the consistent identification of the location: “Ziguinchor (Casamance region)” (Senegal), as well as the date “September 1963.”
The central part of the label clearly states: “painted in oil from life by Jacques de Saint-Seine, painter,” providing valuable insight into the conditions under which the work was created.
This work is part of the body of work by Jacques de Saint-Seine (1897–1972), a painter active in the 20th century, known for his exotically inspired landscapes created during his stays in Africa.
The work is presented in its original wooden frame.
Condition: Very good overall condition.
