Fine Victorian Cameo Brooch, 19th Century
This exquisite brooch is a classic example of popular jewelry from the Victorian era (19th century), a period when cameos were extremely fashionable as souvenirs of the "Grand Tour" or as tokens of affection.
The cameo is crafted by hand-carving a sardonyx shell. This type of shell is prized for the sharp color contrast between the brown-orange background and the milky white relief, which allows the details of the face to stand out.
The setting is made of princisbecco, a copper and zinc alloy that imitates gold.
In this period, princisbecco was chosen because, unlike plating, it did not lose its golden color with wear.
Condition as shown in the photos.
