Artist: Manufacture Du Duc D'orleans - Rue Amelot - Pont Aux Choux
RARE ASSIETTE decorated with bees and a beehive.
Plate with scalloped edge resting on a slight heel.
HARDcorcelain.
White background, decorated with polychrome and gold. At its center, a circular medallion in gold monochrome depicts a beehive set in a landscape, around which several bees are buzzing. The whole is framed by a gold fillet punctuated with small teeth. The background is enlivened by foliage and gold dots. The wing features a compartmentalized design alternating white-background reserves and geometric motifs. The reserves feature flowering urns, garnished with roses and polychrome florets treated au naturel, while the intermediate compartments are decorated with interlacing, foliage and stylized motifs, enhanced with gold fillets and red and green dots. Gold filet borders.
Dimension(s) : Diam. 23.8 cm,
Mark(s) : Stencilled in red "MO" for d'OUTREQUIN de MONTARCY one of the 2 Directors of the Pont aux Choux factory (1784/1786,
).Condition : PERFECT CONDITION,
Era : XVIIIth - LOUIS XVI.
In the XVIIIth century, bees were almost never seen in decorations. The insect doesn't really belong there, probably because it's not part of the "noble" repertoire of the Rocaille or Louis XVI styles. Rather, they are part of a naturalistic or agricultural register, not highly valued at the time, and have no real symbolic significance in the decorative arts. It may be encountered here and there, in rural scenes or encyclopedic illustrations, but never as an ornamental motif in its own right. It wasn't until the end of the century, between 1780 and 1790, that its presence was more discreetly felt. Under the influence of the Enlightenment and a growing interest in a useful nature, linked to work and the economy, the bee began to emerge. They appear timidly, sometimes accompanied by hives, evoking notions of industry, virtue and order. But it still remains a rare, almost anecdotal motif.
