Antique Indian Chola Bronze Miniature Of Parvati Seated On A Lion, C12th–13th Hindu Goddess

A rare and evocative South Indian bronze miniature depicting the goddess Parvati seated in lalitasana upon her lion mount, dating to the Chola period, circa 12th–13th century.

Despite its very small scale of just 3.3 cm, the figure conveys the essential iconography of Devi, with a high conical headdress (mukuta), full breasts, and a composed seated posture associated with divine femininity. The lion beneath her reinforces the identification with Parvati in her aspect as the consort of Shiva and as a manifestation of Shakti.

The sculpture shows extensive devotional wear from prolonged handling over centuries. The surface has become smooth and softened, with details of the face and extremities gently worn, and the feet now almost entirely reduced. This kind of wear is entirely consistent with intimate ritual use and personal devotion.

The underside is hollow and pierced, indicating that the figure was originally mounted, most likely as part of a portable shrine or ritual fitting. Such miniature bronzes were intended for personal worship and were handled frequently, explaining the present condition.

This is a genuine and scarce example of a Chola-period miniature bronze, notable for its strong presence despite its diminutive size, and for the clear signs of long devotional use that give it both character and authenticity.

Good condition, with significant age-related wear consistent with handling and use over many centuries.
