Rare Military Ulysse Nardin Pocket Watch, Mg
Artist: Ulysse Nardin
Rare pocket watch from the prestigious "Ulysse Nardin" manufacture, supplied to the Ministry of War, around 1940.
Founded in 1846 in Le Locle, Switzerland, by Ulysse Nardin, the manufacture is famous for its high-precision marine chronometers.
Several military corps from many states were equipped with Swiss watches and the French army thus received as an endowment pocket watches equipped with the 19-line caliber.
To ensure that these "special" manufactured watches were not found on civilian markets and to clearly mark their military property, the screwed watch-heads and dials were marked with a number identifying the watch as well as the mention "MG" for Ministry of War.
A search in the books of the Ulysse Nardin manufacture makes it possible to establish that this movement was produced in a limited quantity, particularly in 1919.
Ulysse Nardin counted only 4484 copies, of which less than 1000 were delivered to the French army.
Delivered in boxes of 6 pieces, these watches had the particularity to have a screwed back with six notches allowing a perfect tightening by means of a key or if necessary with the hand.
The enamel dial was directly numbered so that the numbering could not be erased, for example to give a «civil life» to the watch.
