Large pocket watch from the prestigious "IWC" manufactory, circa 1919.
In 1868, Boston watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the "International Watch Co." in Schaffhausen. His plan was to combine cutting-edge American manufacturing technologies with the expertise for which Swiss watchmakers were renowned. In Schaffhausen, he found the ideal conditions: modern factories, a hydroelectric power plant powered by the Rhine to run the machinery, and, just as importantly, a centuries-old watchmaking tradition. Following a financial crisis, the company was taken over in 1880 by Johann Rauschenbach-Vogel, a mechanical engineer from Schaffhausen, and transformed into a wholly Swiss-owned enterprise. Since then, the company has remained in the family for four generations...

“Probus Scafusia” hallmark on the inside.
With the “Probus Scafusia” hallmark, the Swiss brand’s uncompromising pursuit of precision and reliability was officially defined in 1903.
The Latin motto, which can be translated as “Quality Made in Schaffhausen,” was coined by the then-director of IWC, Johannes Rauschenbach-Schenk.
Case engraved “International Watch Co.” Diameter 57 mm.
White enamel dial with Arabic numerals. Original hands. Mineral glass.
Signed “International Watch Co.”
Movement caliber 52 H6, anchor escapement.
Patent No. +55231 (The IWC patent concerned a method of securing the dial using spring clips that engaged with the reduced size of the dial lugs to hold the dial flush against the movement).
Sterling silver chain including. 23cm.
In excellent condition, works well.
