Rare pocket watch with a cylinder escapement, hour and quarter-hour repeater, and calendar,
signed "Eardley Norton No. 653."
18th century.
Pocket watches with cylinder movements from the late 18th century are rare because they represented a difficult, costly, and complex transition from the traditional verge escapement of the time.
Furthermore, these watches were produced by small artisan workshops and were often signed by master watchmakers.
In this case, the watch is signed by Eaderley Norton, active between 1762 and 1794, one of the most respected and talented British watchmakers who worked in London at 49 St. John Street, known for crafting complex timepieces—the most famous of which is a four-dial astronomical clock made for King George III, now on display at Buckingham Palace, along with other clocks found in numerous museums around the world.
Gilded movement with a cylinder escapement, chiseled bridge, and signed dust cover.
The hour and quarter-hour repeater functions correctly, as does the calendar function.
White enamel dial signed "Eardley Norton London" with calendar and original hands.
Mineral glass.
Equipped with a key for winding and setting.
The clock consists of two 925 sterling silver cases in good condition, hallmarked by the
City of Chester.
Pierced inner case.
