Pair Of Empire Period Gilt Bronze Andirons, 19th C.
- Pair of gilded bronze andirons, French Empire period circa 1810
- Each andiron is composed as follows: a balustrade formed of seven turned balusters resting on a base with a molded plinth projecting at the ends forming square piers. The latter are adorned with a relief applique depicting trophies of musical instruments. One depicts a lyre, topped with a knotted ribbon, in which a laurel branch is housed. The other depicts a hunting horn, a straight horn and sheet music, all held in place by a ribbon whose passementerie tassels can be seen at the bottom of the trophy. Each lyre stack supports an ovoid ornament mounted on a pedestal, whose polished surface is embellished with a chased ring motif and fine scrollwork. At the end, the pile with the horn supports a sphinx bearing the nemes from which broad wavy locks escape.
- This pair of andirons is distinguished by the quality of the carved and chased decorations, and by that of its gilding.
