Wooden Sculpture Of An Angel Carrying The Passion Column, 16th Century

- Oak wood sculpture depicting an Angel carrying the Passion Column, a 16th-century work from Northern France/Flanders.

- This oak wood sculpture reproduces the iconography of the Angel carrying the Passion Column, recognizable by the column encircled by a rope and the androgynous figure whose back features mortises where wings (now missing) once held. In this iconography, the column carries strong symbolic weight: it belongs to the instruments of the Passion and is simultaneously a Christian symbol (mediation between earth and heaven) and, through its rectitude, a symbol of unwavering Faith.

- This work is remarkable for certain finely sculpted attributes, such as the angel's curly hair and the treatment of the drapery, which makes perceptible the different layers of fabric in his garment and the movement of the material according to his position. This pose is reminiscent of the contrapposto poses of the Renaissance.

- This sculpture is similar to the one in the Musée du Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille (Inv. No. A 153). - Mounted on a blackened wooden base inlaid with bone wire. Visible losses and wear (see photos). Traces of polychromy are present.

- Dimensions of the sculpture: Height: 38.5 cm, Width: 7.5 cm, Total height (with base): 51 cm.

The column, a support of coercion and belonging to the Instruments of the Passion, is simultaneously a Christian symbol (mediation between earth and heaven) and, through its rectitude, a symbol of unwavering Faith.
