A Martin Varnish Spectacle Case Decorated With Chinoiserie, Pagodas And Figures, 18th Century
An oblong spectacle case in Martin varnish, decorated with superimposed chinoiserie scenes in three registers on each side, depicting figures, birds, pagodas, and vegetation in the stylized style of Asian art. This object is highly representative of the fascination with the arts of the Far East, or at least their fantasized and "reinterpreted" representation in European decorative arts. The interior is lined with black velvet. It is in very good overall condition considering the fragility of this object, which was also intended for frequent handling; there are, of course, some minor losses to the decoration, documented by the photographs. This type of object is quite rare on the market. It comes with a business card from the shop that sold it to a previous owner in 1970, Lorenzaccio in Aix-en-Provence, as well as a letter from Mr. François-Charles de Cormis, an expert accredited to the Court of Appeal, dated July 9, 1970, attesting to the object's age. These documents will be given to the buyer. Dimensions: 20 x 5 cm.
