Circular papier-mâché box with portrait of a gentleman, Netherlands, first half of the 18th century.

Refined snuffbox or jewellery box in painted papier-mâché, with a lid decorated with a finely executed portrait of a gentleman in Flemish taste. The bust-length figure shows a man with a proud and contemplative gaze, dark hair and beard, wearing a white embroidered collar and a dark coat adorned with a golden chain.

The painting is of outstanding quality, distinguished by its naturalistic rendering of the complexion, attention to detail, and luminous chromatic modulation of the background. The composition and iconography recall 17th-century Northern European portraiture, filtered through an 18th-century collector’s sensibility.

The original black-lacquered papier-mâché body presents a compact and uniform patina with a distinctive craquelure, attesting to its authenticity. This is clearly a cultured object, probably made for a collector or as a travel souvenir.

Very good condition, with minimal wear to the lacquered and painted surface, perfectly consistent with its age. Painting intact, colours vivid, structure stable.
