Ecce Homo – Oil on copper. Italy, 17th century.
An intense devotional painting depicting the face of Christ crowned with thorns, executed in oil on a copper plate, with its original carved and gilded wooden frame. The work, small in size yet of high pictorial quality, is realized with a refined technique on a metal support, allowing for extraordinary brightness and precision in detail.
Christ's face, slightly turned toward the viewer, conveys composed sorrow and a gaze that unites humanity and spirituality. Particularly remarkable is the soft rendering of the complexion, the naturalistic treatment of the hair, and the luminous vibrancy of the blood dripping from the crown of thorns—a sign of the painter's sensitivity.
On the back of the plate, a handwritten signature "Annibale Carracci" is visible—not authenticated, but indicative of a traditional attribution or a period replica inspired by the Bolognese master’s models.
The work is in excellent condition, with well-preserved copper, intact paint surface, and original frame in good state.
