Marine octant signed "Buron à Paris", circa 1790-1810.
Ebony, partially gilded brass, and ivory inlays; height: 30 cm.
Inlaid : ruler, signature, and vernier scale.
Mirrors and filters in good condition. A rare signature on an octant. Its well-fitted oak case bears the label of a Marseille merchant, partially erased.
"In 1788, Buron père founded the 'Manufacture d’instruments d’optique et de mathématiques' located on 10 rue des trois Pavillons in Paris (now rue Elzévir in 3rd arrondissement). From 1818, company was run by Noël Buron, the son, who received numerous awards at public exhibitions of French industrial products: silver medals in 1834 and 1839, and a gold medal in 1844. In good, as-found condition, which appears complete, but requires meticulous cleaning. One hook is missing on box.
