Large Sculpture By Anthonin Mercié • Barbedienne • ''david And Goliath''
Artist: Anthonin Mercié
Bronze Sculpture by Anthonin Mercié (1845 - 1916), "David"
An iconic model, blending grace with the starkness of the subject.
Double-patinated bronze, chocolate and gilded.
When composing his David in 1869, Mercié was a resident at the French Academy in Rome. His ambition was to renew the depiction of this biblical episode, showing the young shepherd's victory over the giant Goliath, while also aligning himself with the great Renaissance Florentine bronze artists, particularly Donatello and Verrocchio.
Presented at the Salon after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, David was a great success due to the elegance of its pose and the firmness of its modeling, as well as being a symbol of hope for a future French victory over Prussia.
A similar replica is displayed at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
