18th-century Delftware Tile Depicting A Peasant Scene With A Farmer Seen From Behind

Artist: Delft
Delft tile from the 18th century, peasant farmer’s back scene

Delft earthenware is a story of commercial and artistic ingenuity in the Netherlands beginning in the 17th century in the eponymous city of Delft.

At that time, the Europeans were fascinated by Chinese porcelain: robust, visually fascinating with its cobalt blue and white colors which soon aroused the decorative desire of bourgeois houses and castles, being torn off for gold.

Chinese porcelain is expensive. Imported by the East India Company, as the travel time is long, the risk of looting and sinking exists, and creates frustration among European customers. Delft then decides to create potteries in order to compete with China and satisfy European demand.

The model of Delft until the eighteenth century (where this tile comes from) is modeled on the Asian color while detaching itself from chinoiseries to adopt a more European decor: scene of life & landscapes of Holland or Europe painted by hand in cobalt blue on an enameled white background.

This tile of Delft earthenware is rare, its scene is that of a farmer watching his harvest, from behind, peasant’s hat and stick in hand. Each corner is surrounded by arabesques, all painted by hand.
