"Color is, par excellence, the part of art that possesses a magical gift. While subject, form, and line speak first to thought, color has no meaning for the intellect, but it has all the power over the senses." Eugène Delacroix.
Frédéric Samuel Cordey, an Impressionist painter,
Frédéric Samuel Cordey uses a bold, glazed brushstroke here, layering diluted touches to create masses of color that capture the light. Impressionist works emphasize light and color.
This still life boasts a colorful and contrasting palette.
With this bouquet of flowers, Frédéric Samuel Cordey affirms his talent as a colorist. He makes the colors vibrate, combining both warm and cool hues in beautiful harmony. He uses elements of the setting—the curtain in the background, the vase, the tablecloth—to work with his materials and colors in a harmonious disorder.
Frédéric Samuel Cordey's biography:
He moved with the Impressionists, exhibiting four paintings with the group at the fourth Impressionist exhibition in 1877.
A student of Isodor Pils and Gustave Boulanger at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he was part of the group (Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley) that rebelled against academic teaching to follow the path of Impressionism.
The artist participated in the Salon d'Automne from 1903 onward. He exhibited only rarely, and art critics were full of praise for him. A retrospective exhibition was held at the Galerie Choiseul in Paris in 1913. His wealth allowed him to work according to his own aspirations without depending on criticism or the support of dealers.
Admired by Gustave Caillebotte and particularly close to Auguste Renoir, he appears in several of the artist's paintings, including "Bal du Moulin de la Galette." Renoir also depicted him in "La Conversation," alongside the model, Marguerite Legrand, known as "Margot," a painting now in the National Museum in Stockholm.
A meticulous landscape painter, he delighted in portraying the surrounding nature; while the Auxerre countryside was one of the painter's favorite places, he also stayed near Camille Pissarro in Neuville-sur-Oise and Eragny-sur-Oise.
