From 1877 to 1882, Hans Zatzka studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Christian Griepenkerl and Carl von Blaas. As a student of the Academy, he received the Füger Gold Medal. A decorative painter, he was particularly fond of subjects from Wagnerian operas, as well as religious and mythological scenes. Zatzka is highly regarded for his portraits of young girls, his allegorical scenes with nymphs and putti, his Oriental genre scenes, and his Madonnas.
