Madonna And Child, Signed And Dated By Antonio Boldini 1849; Oil On Canvas With A Fine Frame

Artist: Antonio Boldini (ferrara 1799 – 1872)
An elegant and refined *Madonna and Child Asleep*,a fine oil painting on canvas dated 1849 and signed on the reverse: “AntoniusBoldini Ferrariensis fecit. 1849”.
Antonio Boldini (1799–1872), father of the famous painterGiovanni Boldini, was an artist and restorer active in Ferrara duringthe 19th century. Trained in the Ferrara milieu and the Roman academictradition, he devoted himself primarily to sacred painting. His work played animportant role in the artistic development of his son Giovanni Boldini, whoreceived his first lessons in drawing and painting from his father.
The work depicts the Virgin gently gazing atthe Baby Jesus asleep in her arms.
The composition, characterized by intense maternal feeling and delicate spirituality, isdistinguished by the balance of its forms, the softness of the flesh tones, and the subtlerendering of the drapery, dominated by the traditional Marian tones of blue and red.In the full spirit of the 19th century, the painting reveals asolid academic training and a particular focus on theItalian Renaissance model, with references to Emilian devotional painting.
Theblended landscape background helps to enhance the sense of intimacy andcontemplation of the scene.
The work is enhanced by a spectacular gilded and carved woodenframe, richly decorated with plant motifs and ornamental panelsthat heighten its visual impact.
