Giuseppe Ghezzi (1624–1721), Abraham’s Servant, 17th Century, Large Oil On Canvas Painting

Artist: Giuseppe Ghezzi (comunanza, 1634 – Roma, 1721)

Large oil on canvas depicting a biblical episode from the Book of Genesis (24:50–54): Abraham’s Servant Presents Eliezer’s Gifts to Bethuel and His Family, by the painter Giuseppe Ghezzi (Comunanza, 1624 – Rome, 1721), a leading figure in the Roman artistic scene of the second half of the seventeenth century.
The scene depicts the culminating moment of the encounter between Eliezer, Abraham’s servant, and the family of Bethuel, Rebecca’s father, following the successful completion of the mission entrusted to him by the patriarch Abraham: to find a wife for his son Isaac. Having recognized divine providence in his encounter with Rebecca, Eliezer expresses his gratitude by presenting precious gifts, while the family prepares to hear his account and marriage proposal.
As noted by Dr. Alessandro Agresti in his art-historical assessment, the painting displays significant artistic quality, although it remains on its original canvas and requires cleaning. Its colour palette, rich in warm, earthy tones, and its evocative power are already evident in its present condition, bearing witness to the artist’s refined painterly sensibility.
Agresti’s stylistic analysis identifies close comparisons with works securely attributed to the master, particularly the Holy Family with Angels in the Church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami in Rome, and Domitian Condemns Saint Ginmasius to Death, held in a private collection. Similarities can be observed in the anatomical construction of the figures, the faces of the Virgin and Rebecca, the rendering of the drapery, the flowing hairstyles, and the characterization of the young man at the centre of the composition.
The painting should be dated to an early phase of Giuseppe Ghezzi’s career, around 1680, when the artist was experimenting with a broader, more vibrant style of painting, characterized by energetic expressive forms and a particularly intense colour palette.
Period frame, requiring restoration. Still on its original canvas.
