Artist: Bottega Di Vincenzo Campi (1536–1591)
The painting depicts the Appearance of the Risen Christ to the Marias, a Gospel episode from the account of the Resurrection.
Christ, wrapped in the shroud and with a radiant halo, appears to the women in a landscapeat day break. The figure of the Redeemer dominates the composition, standing alone against the dark back drop of the trees, while at his feet Mary Magdalene is depicted kneeling in a posture of devotion.
Behind her, the other women witness the apparition with their hands clasped and their gaze turned toward Christ.
The work is attributed to the workshop of Vincenzo Campi and, according to the technical and historical documentation provided, constitutes a later version of the composition now preserved at the convent of Santa Mariadella Pace in Brescia, traditionally attributed to the Cremonese painter.
The canvas follows the same compositional structure and, according to technical analysis, was likely executed using the same preparatory cartoon, with no substantial changes compared to the Brescian composition.
In terms of execution, the painting features araised and substantial paint layer, with bold brush strokes subsequently softened by finishing glazes.
