Artist: Frans Francken I Attribué à
Attributed to Frans Francken I. Oil on copper, "The Lactation of Saint Bernard," unsigned. 33.8 x 27.7 cm (sight size). Flemish School. Frans Francken I (1542-1616) came from a family of painters whose lineage can be traced back five generations. At a young age, Francken went to Antwerp to study under Frans Floris (1516-1570). Francken continued the spread of the Italianate style initiated by his master, Floris. The subject of the Lactation of Saint Bernard was very popular in Francken's time, as it emphasized the humanity of the Virgin and the importance of monastic devotion. It is worth noting that the treatment of light, and in particular the highly graphic halo around the Virgin and Child, is typical of the Francken family's art. Furthermore, the small flowers scattered on the paving stones are a recurring signature of Antwerp painters of this period. The symbol of Christ the Savior of the World is a frequent motif in Francken's work, represented here by the Christ Child holding the orbis terrarum. Modern giltwood frame. Good condition. 3600 euros.
