Episcopal Wax Seal – Henry III of Stahleck, Bishop of Strasbourg (†1260) – 13th Century.
A rare and moving episcopal seal in brown wax dating from the 13th century, depicting Henry III of Stahleck, Bishop of Strasbourg, who died in 1260.
Of a type known as a "cake seal," this large example (8 cm high by 6 cm wide, excluding the vellum tails) impresses both by its presence and its excellent state of preservation, remarkable considering its age.
The obverse features the bishop in a solemn representation, in keeping with medieval iconography of the episcopal office. The reverse bears three large fingerprints, left during the application of the seal. These perfectly visible marks lend the object a particularly poignant dimension: they constitute a direct and almost intimate trace of the seal-maker, passing through the centuries to the present day.
Seals from this period, and especially of this quality, are extremely rare on the art market today, with the majority held in public collections.
