A fine and important walnut armoire from Lorraine, dating to the late Louis XV period, circa 1760–1780.
The façade is richly animated by a beautifully carved relief decoration, centered around two large doors with deeply moulded panels. The dynamic, flowing outlines of the panels give the piece a surprisingly modern presence.
The central vertical motif, carefully structured and rhythmically carved, reinforces the architectural balance of the composition.
The quality of the carving is particularly noteworthy: the motifs are crisp and lively, reflecting the skilled craftsmanship characteristic of Lorraine production in the second half of the 18th century. The armoire retains a beautiful, warm patina with deep tonal variations.
The lock escutcheons, handles, and large exposed bronze hinges elegantly highlight the woodwork and contribute to the strong character of the piece.
The interior has been later adapted, making the armoire highly functional for contemporary use.
Condition: very good overall condition. A small, discreet loss is visible on one of the doors. The original internal locking mechanisms have been removed.
The piece has been treated against woodworm and carefully waxed.
Gallery’s view:
A statement piece with remarkable presence and a surprisingly modern design for an 18th-century work. Both authentic and highly decorative, it integrates effortlessly into a contemporary interior.
