Jean Commère (1920-1986) was a French painter, watercolorist, draftsman, engraver, and illustrator. In 1936, he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers and then to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From that time on, he participated in numerous exhibitions in France and abroad. In 1951, he had his first solo exhibition in Paris at the Galerie Monique de Groote. He won the Othon-Fries Prize for his painting "Floods at Denée," was made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 1958, participated in the Venice Biennale, had his first retrospective in New York at the Galerie Philippe Reichenbach, and went on to win numerous awards (Critics' Prize, Deauville Biennale Prize, Francis Smith Prize, etc.). His works are ,initially, influenced by the miserabilist expressionism of the immediate post-World War II period, giving a harsh and desolate representation of reality, he would later paint numerous seascapes, portraits, and genre scenes highlighting his talents as a draftsman and colorist.
