English Bow-back Pub Bench In Solid Curved Oak, Georgian Period, 19th Century

Solid Oak Curved High-Back English Pub Bench / Bow-Back Settle, Georgian Period, Early 19th Century

High-back "settle" or tavern bench. English craftsmanship from the Georgian period, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century.

Entirely crafted in solid oak. Curved architectural profile, known as a "bow" shape, forming a continuous arc.

Back & Sides: Extra-tall backrest composed of juxtaposed vertical wooden slats mounted edge-to-edge. Solid, scalloped side panels that form both the sinuously shaped armrests and the base.

Seat & Base: Curved seat made of wide oak boards, cantilevered over a lower box section that serves as a structural base. Traditional pegged joinery.

Aesthetic: Brutalist and vernacular aesthetic, devoid of any carved ornamentation, dictated by the original piece's function of thermal protection (acting as a draft excluder in a pub or tavern).

Remarkable state of preservation given its age. Traces of customary restoration. Sound, stable, and robust structure; absolutely no wobble, allowing for heavy-duty use. Wear consistent with age, signs of use, old tool marks, and surface scratches that contribute to the piece's character. Superb, rich, dense, and nuanced brown patina. There is a localized loss of a plinth fragment on the lower left rear, which is invisible from the front and has no impact on the structural integrity or stability of the bench.
