Pair Of Architectural Elements Of Fantastic Figures, Early 16th C. Nordic Art.

Artist: à Etudier
Interesting architectural protomes in carved wood depicting fantastic figures, a feminine one and a masculine one, and had an apotropaic function. It is probable that these sixteenth-century elements decorated a larger wooden architectural complex and were placed at the base of a terrace or entablature and therefore viewed from bottom to top. The origin of these elements is certainly Nordic and reflects in a certain way the Breton and French culture, with the continuation of the Gothic connotations throughout the 16th century.
