Late Gothic sculpture (early 16th century) in walnut.
Presumably made in Flanders
Saint Barbara is a Christian saint and martyr.
According to legend, Barbara was the daughter of a pagan. He locked her in a tower to protect her from outside influences. Despite her isolation, she came into contact with Christianity. During the renovation of her residence, she ordered three windows to be installed. This allowed her to secretly express her faith by referring to the Holy Trinity. Her father had her tortured after discovering her conversion and eventually beheaded her with his own hands. As punishment, he was then struck dead by lightning. Barbara is seen as a protector against sudden death, fire and lightning.
She is also the patron saint of dangerous professions. Saint Barbara's death anniversary is 4 December.
Saint Barbara is almost always depicted with a tower with three windows. In this sculpture, she is also holding a book, which symbolises her religious devotion and piety.
