Ernest Gabard : “las Heytes De Caddetou”
GABARD (Ernest) "Las Hèytes de Caddetou" by E. GABARD, circa 1920.
First edition, oblong folio (approximately 30 x 40 cm), 22 color illustrated plates, captioned in Béarnais.
Stapled under a blue-green half-percaline binding with corners, detached from the cover, significant tear to the last plate, color illustrated boards, soiled and scribbled on in pencil, foxing and internal soiling.
For those unfamiliar with this Béarnais artist, it is worth noting that this sculptor, briefly a disciple of Rodin, was also a painter, illustrator, and poster artist, creating one of the very first posters on the theme of aviation (Pau was home to the first flying school) and countless sculptures, both religious and secular.
Mobilized during the Great War, its horrors inspired him to create numerous pacifist war memorials, but his works also adorn fountains and churches.
He created the archetype of the Béarnais, the famous Caddetou, who was reproduced as a series of statuettes, including a rare car mascot, the hero of our album—a hero if you can call him that, as he's a bit of a drunkard and constantly gets into mischief and misadventures!
