1682. Logic, Or The Art Of Thinking

Artist: Antoine Arnaud Et Pierre Nicole
Logic is one of the essential foundations of discourse, to the point of becoming a true scientific discipline, a veritable bridge between philosophy and mathematics. The authors of this book, Antoine Arnaud (1612-1684) and Pierre Nicole (1625-1695), both eminent philosophers, mathematicians, and theologians, are the principal thinkers of a religious movement that fractured society in the mid-17th century: Jansenism. Developed at Port-Royal, as a school of thought in religious and political opposition, it was at odds with the clergy and the royal power. Its practice impressed people with its simple and ascetic life, and the nobility of the court came to observe this simple life of the community firsthand. Gaining increasing influence in society (a Jansenist party was formed), the Pope, after periods of appeasement, put an end to this experiment with the papal bull Unigenitus. The king expelled the religious community from Port-Royal. Yet the thought developed by this doctrine continued to permeate society until the Revolution. This is certainly due to the quality of the teaching by the thinkers of this movement. Our work, conceived within the framework of Port-Royal, remained a cornerstone of logic teaching until the 19th century and was still being discussed at the end of the 20th century. It sweeps aside the old treatises of scholasticism and synthesizes the most modern thinkers of its time. It is therefore an essential work in the history of this discipline. It has been published numerous times, right up to the present day. This explains why our copy presented here has been used; it remains in good condition, a little rubbed, with some stains and annotations, but is still quite sturdy. 12mo, 479 pages plus tables and privilege
