Bronze with a lustrous brown patina - signed on the base - Dusting around the grapes. Weight 8.5 kg. Good condition. The artist, 1892-1945, abandoned his economics studies for sculpture. A student of Fumio Asakura at the Academy of Fine Arts, he exhibited from 1919. He worked for about ten years on a project for a gigantic monument (now destroyed) glorifying Japanese history: "The Eight Corners of Heaven and Earth." He traveled to Europe in the 1920s, bringing back a Western Art Deco and Symbolist influence. This classical/Japanese blend is sometimes criticized. He is known for numerous medals, military figures (related to the war in Manchuria and the Pacific), and Shinto figures. Shortly before his death, he was working on a monument for the women soldiers of the Battle of Saipan. This Bacchus, in a very French style, fits within his commercial output: serene subjects, far removed from the tumult of the world.
